Transport giant Scania develops first hydrogen fuel truck

“The use of hydrogen fuel cells is a very attractive alternative for heavy commercial vehicles like garbage trucks. Trucks in this regard is much more profitable than passenger cars. They benefit from all the benefits of a new type of energy, while retaining some of the best aspects of engines that run on hydrocarbons: a long time without refueling and a good payload. ”

It is expected that the first Scania truck with hydrogen fuel cells will be delivered at the end of 2019 – early 2020. The beginning of the first tests of the new car is scheduled for the same period. The development is carried out in close cooperation with the Government of Sweden, so, given the country’s course towards improving the environmental situation, it is possible not to worry about the availability of first buyers.

Russian rocket for the exploration of the moon can cost 1.5 trillion rubles

Creating a super heavy rocket and using it to fly around the moon could cost the Russian budget 1.5 trillion rubles. About this reports the publication “RIA Novosti”, citing its sources in the rocket and space industry. According to one of the agency’s interlocutors, the draft federal targeted program for creating an extra-heavy rocket and unmanned flyby of the moon will be prepared by Roscosmos and submitted to the government by January 15.

This is a program designed for 2020-2030 with prescribed amounts. The source reports that at the moment various variants of super-heavy carrier with different costs are being considered, but “on average, the program needs about 1.5 trillion rubles”.

In this case, it is only about developing a rocket, creating a prototype and carrying out one unmanned flyby of the moon. The announced amount does not include the development of a spacecraft that will be launched with it. Its creation will be funded by another program. It also provides for carrying out a manned flyby of the Moon in the above indicated periods. But again, this will require additional funding.

The appearance of the launch vehicle will be determined at the December 18 meeting of the scientific and technical council of Roscosmos. At the meeting it is planned to choose the main and two additional options. The most promising and priority in terms of choice at the moment, according to the source, are Progress RCC projects with six side blocks based on the Soyuz-5 missile, the RSC Energia project with five side blocks based on the Soyuz-5 base and the project to restore the production of the Soviet energy rocket.

Big changes with Apple computers are rare. After the company introduces a new Mac, for several years only internal components are updated in it, and the case and a set of external interfaces remain unchanged. Due to this, users can migrate to more powerful hardware, keeping the usual workflow and peripheral equipment.

Previous reform of the MacBook Pro line – changing laptops in a “thick” unibody-body on a model with a Retina screen four years ago – also went pretty painlessly. To make the computer thinner, Apple had to sacrifice basically just the obsolete or redundant technologies in the mobile device – optical drive, FireWire ports, infrared sensor, etc. Then the MacBook Pro with Retina display went through several iterations of the hardware platform, and although 15 Inch version missed the output of Intel processors on the Broadwell core, the 2015 models still do not lack performance and capabilities.

However, in the past after the previous upgrade, a whole queue of hardware components lined up that could supplement the new version of the machine. The CPU on the Skylake core is the first item on this list, but no less important is the appearance of discrete GPUs built using the 14-16 nm process technology and the Thunderbolt bus with the USB Type-C connector, which claims to completely replace all existing peripheral connection standards.

However, Apple remained aloof from some of the trends that dominated notebooks in recent years, in the first place – convertible form factors and touch-screens. In addition, although the MacBook Pro is considered a fairly thin and light machine for a laptop with a two-quad core processor i5 / 7, rivals have already beaten records of Apple in this discipline.

That after the upgrade of 2015 the computer is threatened with a complete change of design, one could judge by the 12-inch ultracompact MacBook . But Apple has gone further than anyone who could not guess the secrets of development could have guessed. Some ideas embodied in the new MacBook Pro look bold and prudent, but at the same time controversial and even outrageous in the eyes of the conservative party of users. The Touch Bar models of both sizes are equipped with processors with the Skylake core operating at higher frequencies compared to similar positions based on Broadwell and Haswell in the past MacBook Pro. In the 13-inch Mac, the three available CPU options have a base frequency of 200 MHz above Broadwell with the 28 TW remaining unchanged. The 15-inch model has benefitted from the upgrade more – the two older modifications have only increased the frequency by 200 and 100 MHz, but at the same time – by as much as 400 MHz for the younger one, and the TDP chips even slightly decreased (45 instead of 47 W). However, quad-core Skylake has less delta between base and peak frequency achievable with a single-threaded load, compared to Haswell chips (900 and 1200 MHz respectively).

But the choice of CPU for the “budget” 13-inch model is more like the MacBook Air, rather than the MacBook Pro, if you judge them by TDP (15 W) and base frequencies (2.0 and 2.4 GHz). However, in single-threaded mode, they can reach no less frequencies than the previous Broadwell, and are not significantly inferior to those available in the Force Touch model. The limited thermal package imposes restrictions, mainly on the joint load of the x86 cores and the built-in GPU.

Chip Skylake did not cause an ovation in his desktop hypostasis, because the performance gain on the clock in comparison with Broadwell in most scenarios is modest. However, some universal changes made to the core x86 Skylake, are important for mobile PCs in general and “Mac” in particular. This is more efficient work of Hyper-Threading (useful for processors with a small number of cores) and acceleration by 17-33% of the AES operations that are used by Macintosh in the VOLVault encryption program.

In the rest, the processor was designed primarily for mobile devices and includes a number of energy-saving technologies implemented at various levels, starting with fine power gating and ending with the integrated clock and voltage control logic in the CPU – Speed Shift. Provided that the operating system is ready to disassociate these functions (MacOS is able to do this, starting with the El Capitan version), transitions across a table containing P-state pairs occur faster (1 ms instead of 20-30 Ms) and more accurate gradations.

According to Intel, using Speed ​​Shift, the processor reaches a peak frequency from the energy-saving state in 35 ms, while under OS control it would take 100 ms. Low latency in this case is used to quickly perform work at high frequency and voltage values ​​and return power to the initial level.

A major contribution to the energy efficiency of mobile Skylake was made by the redesigned uncore-segment of the chip. The integrated graphics of the ninth generation, according to Intel, has a 34-41% faster performance than that of Broadwell (data for the two younger versions of silicon – Skylake-Y and Skylake-U), which was confirmed in our test of the second version MacBook with a 12-inch screen . The fixed functionality media block in Skylake can decode video formats HEVC and VP9, ​​and also encode HEVC with 8-bit color (10-bit color with GPU), while at the same time saving energy more economically.

Moreover, the processors selected for the 13-inch MacBook Pro carry a discrete 64-bit Crystal Well cache chip designed specifically for accelerating the performance of the embedded GPU, otherwise limited by the bandwidth of the RAM (although And in a number of problems not related to graphics, the additional level of the cache itself manifests itself.)

By the way, the new MacBook Pro uses LPDDR3 memory, not LPDDR4, because Skylake, according to Intel specifications, is not compatible with the low-voltage version of DDR4. But Apple simply increased the frequencies in laptops with Force Touch to the level of DDR4, in addition to the formal limitation of Intel for these CPUs.

All modifications of the 15-inch MacBook Pro, including the younger one, are deprived of Crystal Well chips, but in return they received discrete GPUs from the AMD family of Polaris. Three available options – Radeon Pro 450, 455 and 460 – are built on a Polaris 11 chip and differ in the number of activated shader ALUs. AMD was the supplier of discrete GPUs for last year’s MacBook Pro despite a more profitable alternative to NVIDIA’s performance per watt, but now Apple simply had no other choice, because NVIDIA has not yet released the Pascal chip in the appropriate power category.

Three Radeon Pro options for reference specifications have a speed in FP32 calculations of 1, 1.3 and 1.8 TFLOPS, respectively. For a top-end chip this is a huge increase compared to the Radeon R9 M370X (1,024 TFLOPS) in the MacBook Pro in 2015, with the TDP graphics core dropping from 45 to 35 watts. Another advantage of Polaris is that GlobalFoundries uses plates with a thickness of 0.38 mm, unlike the 0.78 mm plates that AMD previously received from TSMC. In addition, the Radeon Pro brand means that its drivers are certified and optimized for basic design and design applications. The models with Touch Bar have new SSDs installed on the Samsung controller. Judging by performance measurements, we are unlikely to make the mistake of recognizing a chip called Polaris, which is also used in Samsung SSD 960 PRO and 960 EVO . In the “budget” MacBook Pro – the same SSD, as in the 12-inch MacBook, for it Apple created its own controller. But, unlike the ultra-compact “Mac”, here the SSD is connected to the chipset by four lines of the system bus. The drives work on the NVMe protocol and, thanks to the updated chipset (PCH) on the Skylake substrate, enjoy the increased bandwidth of PCI Express 3.0.

By the way, the MacBook Pro with function keys is the only model of the triple that allows to dismantle SSD, although Apple again changed the form factor of the drive, so third-party manufacturers will need some time to adapt. The new removable SSD has a wider contact pad with petals on one side, but we can assume that Apple would not develop a new form factor for a single device, and in the future we’ll see it in other Macs, and in combination with eight lines PCI Express, which will pass on both sides of the connector.

In the other two notebooks, the memory and controller chips are soldered directly to the motherboard, so the volume of SSDs to be purchased should be selected for future use.

All digital ports for connecting the peripherals of Apple replaced with USB Type-C connectors that can transmit the signal of the Thunderbolt 3, USB 3.1 Gen 2 or DisplayPort 1.2 interfaces – depending on the type of devices on the other end of the wire. Note that even with a discrete GPU Polaris 11 that supports DisplayPort 1.3 / 1.4 interfaces, the computer is limited to DisplayPort 1.2 functionality due to the fact that the signal commutes the graphics core of Intel. Nevertheless, Mac can output images with resolution up to 5120 × 2880 and a frequency of 60 Hz via two channels of DP 1.2 (MST) via one cable.

The models with the Touch Bar carry two Intel JHL6540 (Alpine Ridge) controllers, each of which serves the Thunderbolt 3 ports on its side of the case and can use up to four PCI Express 3.0 lines. However, the dual-core chip Skylake-U has only 12 lines of PCI Express 3.0, four of which are spent on SSD and two on a Wi-Fi card. As a result, in the 13-inch Mac, three PCI-Express lines are connected to the ports of the Thunderbolt 3 on the left side of the case, and on the right side there are two lines, and only one port from the right pair can operate at a maximum speed of 40 Gbit / S (twice the second version of Thunderbolt).

The 15-inch screen has 16 lines of the system bus and is free from this restriction, as is the “budget” MacBook Pro with function keys, in which there are only two USB Type-C connectors, and both are full-speed.

Thunderbolt 3 is a flexible standard that provides not only enormous bandwidth, but also the ability to connect up to six devices to one port in a chain, among which there can be a monitor that is only familiar with DisplayPort 1.2, but not Thunderbolt , That it is at the end of the chain, and the links nearest to the host controller support the transmission of the video signal). In addition, the new MacBook Pro allows you to connect more devices with a USB interface than the old, which had only two such ports.

USB Type-C is also used for power supply – both the laptop itself (the connectors are designed for power up to 100 W), and peripherals. Each pair of connectors can power one device with a power of 15 watts or two at 7.5 watts.

Replacing all digital ports with a convenient, compact and universal USB Type-C standard is an absolutely justified solution from a technical point of view. In addition, the example of Apple will help the wider distribution of both the connector itself and the Thunderbolt 3 interface, which already looks more tenacious than its predecessors – due to the common form factor with USB 3.1 and the possibility to use inexpensive passive cables that did not have Thunderbolt previous versions.

Alas, the picture of the future in the representation of Apple and the developers of external interfaces looks attractive, but here and now the idea spoils the almost inevitable use of various adapters, primarily for connecting flash drives, external HDD and other peripherals with USB Type-A connectors. In addition, Apple decided to part with the formerly integral feature of mobile “Macs” – a magnetic power connector MagSafe. Instead of a light-emitting diode on the plug, a sound signal is now sounding on the plug, but to drop the laptop on the floor, if you step on the cable, there’s nothing to stop (the benefit that third-party manufacturers have already released a replacement as a disconnected cable). To the good or to the bad, but Apple lives by the principle of “all or nothing”: if the laptop can be charged via USB Type-C, MagSafe is no longer needed.

It’s harder to justify the lack of a card reader, especially given that the MacBook is positioned as a working machine, in particular – for editing photo and video content. The replacement of the lost slot will now require money (in the previous “Macs” there was a high-speed card reader with a USB 3.0 bus, the analogues of which are separately expensive), and an additional accessory with its own cable.

The mini-jack connector for acoustics or headset, in spite of the worst expectations, survived, although it is no longer compatible with the TOSLINK interface, the presence of which in the past models many probably did not know.

А вот отсутствие физической клавиши Escape, на наш взгляд, критика переоценивает: в MacOS она используется редко.

Справа от OLED-панели находится механическая клавиша включения с интегрированным биометрическим датчиком. Последний служит для авторизации онлайновых платежей через Apple Pay и входа в ОС (наряду с двумя другими способами — паролем и Apple Watch).

Любопытно, что рендеринг изображений и регистрацию ввода на Touch Bar обслуживает выделенный чип Apple T1, который представляет собой не что иное, как процессор из SiP Apple S2 (см. Apple Watch Series 2), а его ПО является упрощенной версией WatchOS, запускаемой с RAM-диска объемом 25 Мбайт. Интегрированный сопроцессор Secure Enclave в T1 образует защищенную прослойку между ОС и тремя управляемыми им устройствами — Touch Bar, сканером Touch ID и веб-камерой. Кроме того, экранные диалоги Apple Pay в целях безопасности целиком отрисовываются на T1 и доступ к хранилищу паролей Keychain тоже происходит через чип.

Разрешение LCD-панелей в MacBook Pro не выросло (2560 × 1400 и 2880 × 1800 для экранов 13,3 и 15,4 дюйма соответственно), но есть другие изменения: увеличенная яркость (300 до 500 кд/м2) и покрытие цветового пространства DCI-P3. О последнем пункте пора поговорить подробнее, чем мы когда-то сделали ранее в обзоре iMacкоторый приобрел поддержку DCI-P3 первым среди продуктов Apple.

DCI-P3 — стандарт, пришедший из киноиндустрии, он отличается от sRGB прежде всего диапазоном оттенков. Из базовых компонентов DCI-P3 устанавливает такие же координаты синего, как в sRGB, но обеспечивает более насыщенный зеленый и монохроматический красный цвет. По площади покрытия различаемых человеком цветов DCI-P3 сопоставим с Adobe RGB, но уступает последнему в зеленой области и превосходит его в красной.

Однако спецификации DCI-P3 не сводятся к цветовому охвату и содержат среди многих прочих такие параметры, как координаты белой точки и гамма-коррекция. Два документа, принятых SMPTE (Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers), предполагают различные настройки для студийной обработки контента (EG 432-1:2010), с одной стороны, и кинопроекторов, с другой (RP 431-2:2011). Поэтому, говоря о поддержке DCI-P3 в том или ином устройстве, нужно уточнять, что именно имеется в виду. Кинотеатральная версия стандарта включает гамма-коррекцию 2,6 и белую точку с выраженным зеленым оттенком, в то время как студийная — гамму 2,4 и белую точку дневного света, D65.

Apple выбрала именно студийный DCI-P3, который лучше всего подходит для потребительской техники, а гамма 2,4, к слову, использовалась в «Маках» еще до дисплеев с DCI-P3 — в отличие от гаммы 2,2, характерной для Windows. Параметры дисплея не мешают MacOS корректно воспроизводить изображения, созданные в других цветовых пространствах, благодаря системе цветокоррекции ColorSync в MacOS (картинки без отметки цветового профиля она рассматривает как sRGB).

Что касается самой матрицы MacBook Pro, то о ней пока мало что известно помимо того, что подложка сделана из обычного аморфного кремния, а не IGZO, как в iPad Pro. Но, по слухам, к концу 2017 года начнутся массовые поставки подходящих панелей и следующее обновление принесет эту технологию в MacBook Pro, тем самым увеличив энергоэффективность и/или яркость экрана. Для подсветки Apple наверняка использует синие светодиоды, покрытые красным и зеленым люминофором, как это уже было в iMac с расширенным цветовым охватом.

К экрану MacBook Pro у нас возникла только одна претензия — компьютер поддерживает вывод цвета с точностью 10 бит на канал на внешние мониторы, но внутренний интерфейс остался 8-битным.

По расположению компонентов в корпусе 13-дюймовый MacBook Pro с Touch Bar повторяет более крупную модель, с поправкой на иные размеры и количество секций аккумулятора. Но легко заметить, что если в ноутбуке с экраном 15 дюймов решетки по бокам от клавиатуры действительно накрывают динамики встроенной акустики, то в 13-дюймовом это лишь декоративный элемент, а звук исходит из вентиляционных прорезей в днище.

13-дюймовая модель с функциональными клавишами, как и ее предшественница из прошлого поколения (MacBook Pro with Retina display 2015 года) обходится одним вентилятором охлаждения, но, как ни странно, в некоторых отношениях устроена более удачно, чем аналог с Touch Bar. В ней немного увеличена батарея, а с нижней крышки убрали вентиляционные отверстия и динамики работают через решетки по бокам от клавиатуры. Most often, the gaming laptop is a large, 17-inch portable PC, to which in our time it is very difficult to use the word “portable” – due to the large weight and thickness. MSI GS60 2PC-077GB Ghost – the codename of which can be translated as “Ghost” – is a good compromise between power and size. The thickness of its body is from 19.9 to 23.8 mm, and inside the laptop, in addition to the quad-core Intel Haswell, the video card NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M hides. Not bad for a “patch” weighing about two kilograms!

The lid of the laptop is made of metal, as well as the “Dominator Pro” we reviewed recently. The Gaming Series logo is still glowing, fingerprints are accumulating quickly, and erasing them is still not easy. The course of the loops at the lid of the Ghost, in our opinion, turned out to be slightly easier than it should be.

The workspace, like the side panels, is also made of metal, and the stickers on it are surprisingly small. In general, an open laptop will look like a man, brutally, if you do not forget to erase from him ill-fated fingerprints. Alas, the metal coating of the working area is exactly the same as that of the lid, so you can not escape the eternal struggle with “fingers.”

If the usual “Dominator” above the keyboard had a number of touch multimedia keys, then the “Ghost” has only a power button and a trellis panel. Under the panel, not the speakers are hidden, as one might think, but two turbines of the cooling system.

In the lower right corner of the work area there are icons of LED indicators located on the front panel. This is another small violation of MSI traditions, which appeared in the GS series – before the gaming laptops of this manufacturer, the LEDs were located near the touchpad, at the front end.

The Ghost’s keyboard is also different from what we saw in the Dominator. First, it completely changed the fonts, and secondly, now to push the buttons will have to apply a little more effort than before. In this case the stroke of the buttons remained as small as that of other mobile “chicklet” keyboards. Problems with habituation can be felt only at first, and then they will be treated more to unusual fonts than to the progress of the keys. However, if you own the technique of blind printing or use the laptop keyboard for more than a year, then the new fonts should not be very inconvenient. In addition, because of the large and thick Latin letters Cyrillic was very small. In games, however, thick Latin letters will be very useful, if you are not going to often use a text chat in Russian. With the hardness of the keyboard backing, things are fine, but not perfect – it flexes slightly in the center.

Three-zone multi-colored illumination of the keys is also not lost anywhere – the Latin and Cyrillic letters are highlighted. At the same time the laptop has support for the SteelSeries Engine – an application that allows you to reassign buttons to the keyboard and attach custom macros to them. The highlight of the Power key deserves special mention: by default it shines blue, but as soon as the discrete adapter is used instead of the integrated adapter, its color will change to orange.

The touchpad of the hero of our review turned out to be large, its size is 105×75 mm. The area is enlarged in a way that has already become traditional: by getting rid of the allocated mouse buttons. Usually, in gaming laptops, the touch panel is made small because it is almost not needed anyway – 99% of the time the gaming laptop owner will use the mouse.

But our “Ghost” is another matter. This laptop is much lighter and smaller than many of its analogues, so it’s much easier to carry around. And in a cafe with Wi-Fi, a large touchpad that supports gestures will have to come in handy. The panel works perfectly well: we did not notice the problems inherent in most buttonless touchpads.

All laptop ports are located on the sides of the case. On the left, in addition to the anti-theft lock and the power connector, there is a pair of USB 3.0 ports and two audio connectors for connecting separate headphones and a microphone – the laptop did not react to the built-in microphone of the connected headset with a four-contact 3.5 mm jack.

On the right side there is another USB port of the third version, a memory card reader upside down by HDMI, as well as a normally installed Mini DisplayPort and an RJ-45 network connector.

At the front end there is nothing but LEDs, and the rear end is almost entirely given to the ventilation grilles.

By the way, these holes are on the laptop almost from all sides, except for the front face. In theory, such an approach should have a good effect on cooling, but whether it is so or not, we’ll find out in the “Testing” section, but for now, let’s look at the specifications and internal device of the laptop.

Inside our MSI GS60 Ghost we installed a quad-core Intel Core i7-4700HQ processor with a frequency of 2.4 GHz (up to 3.4 GHz in Turbo Boost mode) and a 6 MB L3 cache. We already met a similar processor both in gaming and multimedia notebooks.

RAM in our experimental set to 16 GB. Unfortunately, changing the memory size yourself will be very difficult for two reasons. First, you have to disassemble the laptop to the last cog, because under the service panel there are no slots for RAM. And secondly, to remove the bottoms will have to open the service seal – it is true, representatives of MSI argue that the external seal can be torn safely. But if you damage one of the seals inside the laptop – then you can really say goodbye to the warranty.

We already spoke about the video adapter of the laptop, this NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M with the GK104 chip, created on the Kepler architecture. Usually we do not specify the graphics chip used in notebook reviews, but in the case of the GTX 860M, an exception should be made. In this video card can be used not only the chip GK104, but also the chip GM107, which is built on the new architecture Maxwell . While we do not have exact data on the modification of the MSI GS60 Ghost equipped with an 860M video card with the new architecture, it is likely that such a modification may appear in the near future.

The chips GK104 and GM107 will differ not only in architecture, but also in frequencies. Their base frequencies will be 797 and 1029 MHz, respectively. It’s true that the GM107 does not have to be particularly happy with the frequency increase: there are only 5 streaming multiprocessors inside it, whereas the old chip has six of them.

In addition to discrete graphics, our Ghost has a graphics core built into the processor, Intel HD Graphics 4600, which we meet not for the first time. Of course, graphics can automatically switch from integrated to discrete.

The disk subsystem is represented by two solid-state drives of mSATA format, united in RAID-0 with the size of 238 real gigabytes. A hard drive with a capacity of 1 TB is installed in the notebook in a couple of solid state arrays. In general, the owner of MSI GS60 Ghost should not suffer from a lack of free space.

The laptop battery is built-in, with a capacity of 52 Wh / h (4640 mAh, 11.1 V), and it consists of 6 cells. The usual battery for the “spot”.

The power of the Ghost power supply is 150 W (19.5 V, 7.5 A), and its dimensions and weight are slightly less than those of other power supplies that come with gaming laptops.

But MSI GS60 2PC Ghost costs as much as any gaming laptop. At the time of writing this article for him will have to pay about 67,990 rubles. For a thin and light gaming laptop, this price does not seem very large. But if you want to save money, you can search the stores for the model MSI GS60 2OC Ghost, which will cost about 57 thousand rubles. In this modification, there is no RAID array from SSD and a quad-core processor – it uses a dual-core Intel Core i5-4200H, but the video card is the same.

Separately want to say about the most expensive modification of the “Ghost”, MSI GS60 2Pe Ghost Pro. This notebook will have the most powerful – for the GS60 series – graphics NVIDIA GeForce GTX 870M, IPS-screen with a resolution of 3K (2680×1620 pixels) and 16 GB of RAM. Cost such a modification will be much more, almost 88 thousand rubles. However, if you want to buy a laptop with a 3K-screen, but do not want to overpay, you can save and look for a modification of the “Ghost Pro” version with 8 GB of RAM and one SSD-drive instead of two. The cost of such a laptop will be a little cheaper, about 79 thousand rubles.

In addition, it is worthwhile to know about another important thing. The SteelSeries keyboard, which can be swapped with buttons and customized macros in the SteelSeries Engine application, will only be installed on laptops with GTX 860M graphics.

The metal bottom of the laptop is held on several screws, which can be unscrewed using a Phillips screwdriver. Also on the bottom are three stickers, which the manufacturer decided to remove from the working area of the laptop.

Last month we met one of the new MSI gaming laptops, a simple ” Dominator “. Now our MSI GT70 2PE Dominator Pro laptop, which from the previous guest of our test lab is different in size – this 17-inch model – and also seriously surpasses its predecessor in the filling. The word Pro in the title is not for nothing. In this model, the most powerful video game card from NVIDIA – GeForce GTX 880M is installed.

With the “iron” of the hero of our article, everything is so good that it can be displayed in the Chamber of Weights and Measures as a standard of the 2014 gaming laptop. The Intel Core i7-4930MX Extreme Edition processor and the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 880M graphics card will be able to give a head start to any other gaming laptop available in Russia at the time of writing this article.

⇡ # The contents of delivery

Usually in laptop reviews we do not describe the delivery kit, because in the overwhelming majority of cases there is nothing interesting in it: the laptop itself, the power supply unit and various pieces of paper. In the case of the MSI GT70 2PE Dominator Pro, the buyer will have two delivery packages available: the usual one, described above, and the extended one, which can be called the Super Pack. It will include a corporate backpack, a headset SteelSeries Siberia V2 a mouse SteelSeries Kinzu V2 a mouse pad and a print.

The backpack has a special compartment for the laptop, but unfortunately there are no ribs or other types of protection for it. Therefore, you should carry the laptop with care. But the backpack boasts a large height and a small width, which is very nice. Usually, the backpacks for the “seeds” are made too wide to accommodate any a large laptop, and in this case the size is fitted exactly under the “Dominator.”

The complete SteelSeries Siberia V2 gaming headset is slightly different from the usual version: the MSI logo flaunts the headband instead of the SteelSeries logo, and dragons, symbols of the game series of MSI notebooks are painted on the ear pads. The SteelSeries Kinzu V2 mouse has not been branded.

The last accessory – a seal – can be considered a tribute to the Chinese tradition. Similar seals appeared about 3,600 years ago in ancient China, and under the rule of the Qin Dynasty, almost two thousand years ago, they began to denote the social status and place of a person in the state hierarchy, although ordinary citizens could use such things. For example, on such a seal could be engraved the name of its owner. Probably, thus in MSI they want to emphasize the special position of the owners of the MSI GT70 laptop. Of course, there will not be any name of the owner on this seal, but the dragon looks quite good as well.

⇡ # External appearance

The hero of our article looks almost the same as other MSI gaming laptops from the GT70 series. As in the case of the GT60 we reviewed earlier, the MSI GT70 2PE Dominator Pro metal cover, in addition to the usual MSI logo, has a luminous Gaming Logo. The lid looks beautiful, but it collects fingerprints as quickly as before. You can easily lift the lid of the laptop without problems due to the wide bevels on it and on the working area. The course of the loops is optimal – not too easy, but not too tight.

According to the layout of the main controls “Dominator Pro” also reminds his younger brother. The working area is made of fast metal-covered fingerprints, and the keyboard and touchpad have frames made of at least glossy plastic.

Above the keyboard is a number of familiar touch multimedia keys and a button for turning on the laptop.

Keyboard from MSI GT70 2PE Dominator Pro looks and works the same as in other gaming laptops of the company. The progress of the buttons is moderately deep, and pressing is easily perceptible. Multicolored lighting and the lack of a left-handed Windows key should be especially appreciated by gamers. Although the vibration, which can be felt from the cooling system operating at maximum power, will not be to the liking of all users. The work of the turbine, untwisted to maximum speed, will be felt only in the left upper part of the keyboard. Unfortunately, the WASD buttons are just in this zone.

As before, the keyboard has three backlight zones. You can use either one zone or all three. Colors can also be selected for each zone individually. The Cyrillic alphabet is highlighted as well as the Latin alphabet, and additional symbols on the Fn function keys are not forgotten.

For the creation of the Dominator’s keyboard, SteelSeries was responsible, which means that it should be different from analogues. In particular, thanks to the SteelSeries Engine application, MSI GT70 2PE Dominator Pro owners have the opportunity to customize it. With this application, you can create different macros and reassign keys. We will definitely talk about how this can be done in “Testing”, but for now we will continue to get acquainted with the appearance of the laptop.

The touch panel of our experimental is small, 91×48 mm, but it is equipped with a shutdown button and two physical keys of the mouse. Unfortunately, gestures are almost not supported, and the touchpad disable button works with some oddities. If you connect a mouse to the laptop, the touchpad will be locked automatically. If you turn off the mouse after this, the touch panel will still be locked, and pressing the button for turning it on will not have any effect.

Alas, this defect can only be overcome by disabling the auto-lock in the touch panel settings – even the reboot could not fix the situation. However, we were tested for the pre-production sample MSI GT70 2PE Dominator Pro. We hope that in those versions of the laptop that will be on sale, the glitch we found will be fixed.

Alas, for some reason, some of the USB 3.0 and 2.0 connectors were located too close to each other: non-standard wide flash drives will easily close the neighboring port with their case. However, with so many connectors, hardly anyone will have to suffer from this.

The maximum frequency of the quad-core Intel Core i7-4930MX Extreme Edition is 3.0 GHz and can be increased to 3.9 GHz in Turbo Boost mode. This processor could be called the most powerful, but it has an older brother, Intel Core i7-4940MX Extreme Edition, which is even 100 MHz faster both in normal mode and using Turbo Boost. The cache volume L3 for these two processors is the same – 8 MB.

But the MSI GT70 2PE Dominator Pro, NVIDIA GeForce GT 880M, can be rightly called the most powerful mobile video card. Video memory GDDR5 as much as 8 GB – and this volume in this case is even redundant. The bandwidth of the GK104 video chip used in the notebook will be the “bottleneck”, which will not allow efficient use of the entire amount of video memory.

Of course, there is a “Dominator Pro” and built-in graphics Intel, which the laptop can automatically switch in those cases where high graphics performance is not required.

RAM in the tested MSI GT70 is installed already 32 GB DDR3L-1600 – all four slots are occupied: two under the keyboard and two under the service panel. The disk subsystem MSI GT70 2PE Dominator Pro is represented, on the one hand, by three solid-state drives of mSATA format, united in RAID-0 with the volume of 357 Gbytes. The use of such a system instead of a single SSD should seriously affect the speed of the disk system. On the other hand, many files will not be enough to store files of this size, so in addition to the super-fast SSD-RAID in MSI Dominator Pro there is also an ordinary 2.5-inch hard disk: slow (5400 rpm), but very large (1 TB).

At first glance, with the disk subsystem, everything is just fine, although you do not need to forget one important detail. The matter is that the more in RAID-array of drives, the higher the probability of its failure. Especially RAID-0, used in our experimental, will not allow to restore the data if one of the three drives fails. Therefore, the 3DNews test lab strongly advises, firstly, to take care of backups, and secondly, not to store on this array of really important data.

Powered by a laptop from a massive adapter power of 180 watts – a similar “brick” can be found in the box of any gaming laptop.

As for the battery, we previously met a removable 87Wh (7800mAh, 11.1V) battery in the notebook MSI GT60 Dominator .

The price of the laptop turned out really impressive, about 162 750 rubles for the version with the usual package of delivery. The extended set of “Dominator Pro” – with a backpack, a headset, a mouse, a rug and a seal – costs a little more, 167 250 rubles at the time of writing this article. Discussions on how many cool gaming PCs can be collected for such money, we’ll leave for comments, but let’s remind that anyone, even the most heaped up “desktop” will never become mobile.

In addition, it should be borne in mind that we were dealing with the most expensive configuration of “Dominator Pro”, in which money is taken for the most-most-most. If you moderate your appetites a little – do not by the “extreme” processor and less brutal volume of RAM, abandon the writing drive Blu-ray and RAID-SSD – then the price will almost drop by half.

The Lenovo novelty was demonstrated at CES 2016 and went on sale in the US and Europe in the middle of March this year. It is an updated version of one of the first “premium multimedia notebooks” of the Y-Y70 series, released in 2014.

Also in the company this series of notebooks is referred to as “high-performance gaming models with wide multimedia capabilities”, but, as before, you will not find configurations with top-end GPUs in it. Mostly used are medium-sized graphics adapters. As of 2016, the family is represented by 14-, 15.6- and 17.3-inch models. The last came to us.

⇡ # Package and delivery set

The package is quite simple. It includes an external power supply, a power cable, a warranty card, a sheet with phone numbers of service centers and a safety, warranty and installation manual.

⇡ # External appearance

Design Lenovo Ideapad Y700-17, in general, came in 2016 straight from 2014, almost without changes from the predecessor, Y70. All the same aggressive appearance, which can be used to judge the gaming orientation of the model. The black-and-red color scheme is a familiar trend of such solutions.

And yet the hero of the review is very different from competitors. There is no such gloss as MSI, or excessive restraint in the materials used, like ASUS. Lenovo has a bit of everything. On the top cover there are two barely noticeable bends and a metal with a pattern in the form of intersecting diagonal strips. Looks good! By the way, the bottom cover is almost the same.

To hold the screen in one position, two powerful metal hinges are used to open the display by 130 degrees. A bit, but standard for most gaming models. Since the loops are tight, and the device does not weigh 5-6 kg, then to open the cover you must hold the case with one hand.

There are four indicators on the front face: power, battery status, touchpad operation and drive activity. The power button is metal, with built-in backlight.

On the bottom of the laptop is one long leg and two small square – due to them the laptop does not slip on the table. Immediately you can see two glossy plastic inserts with holes that ensure the flow of cold air to the components of the system. We suspect, however, that their main function is the decoration of the hull. The main assistant of the cooling system is a large metal grill with an integrated filter to reduce the amount of dust. It is through it that cold air gets to the CPU and GPU.

On engraving on the bottom of the laptop it becomes known the exact name of the modification of the hero of the review (Y700-17ISK) and the date of production (December 21, 2015). The place of production is the same – China.

On the case of the device, despite its large size, there are not so many ports: two USB 3.0, one USB 2.0, a combined 3.5mm headphone / acoustics or microphone jack, one HDMI 1.4 and a connector for Wire network (RJ-45).

The network port recently has not been seen so often, especially in pretty thin devices, like our Y700, but in a gaming laptop it just has to be. Next to it is the Kensington Castle.

Build quality is good: the painting and clearances at the joints are uniform. The body does not produce stray sounds – the rigidity of the structure is felt. However, this does not exclude the fact that the upper and lower covers, as well as the keyboard, are slightly pressed through when pressed. The materials used are not very practical. Basically, this applies to black metal surfaces: the pattern used on them weakly hides fingerprints. Slightly better resists them rubberized plastic working surface, but its ideal can not be called.

⇡ # Input devices

The review hero is equipped with an island-style keyboard with keys of matte black plastic with a red edging, white engraving of symbols and again a red illumination. The brightness of the latter can be set in two positions or completely disabled. The keys themselves are not quite standard in form – squares and rectangles with rounded bottom edges, but for Lenovo notebooks it’s a classic.

Thanks to the dimensions of the case on the keyboard, it’s easy to find a place for the digital unit. The layout is pretty standard, but the block of arrows is tightly pressed to the rest of the keys. Unfortunately, the keyboard bends noticeably in the central area. At the edges – slightly less.

The distance between the buttons is almost 4 mm, their thickness is 1.5 mm (working stroke is about 1.2-1.3 mm). The size of the main keys is 15 × 15 mm, the upper control keys are 13 × 8 mm.

All control keys work by default when the modifier is pressed – the Fn button. Pressures are clear, with a moderate force returning force and a deaf sound. The Lenovo Ideapad Y700 can be printed for a long time, which is not always typical for a gaming laptop.

The touchpad of the Y700 is quite large – 105 × 70 mm. It is biased to the left, differs by rounded corners and the use of a matte glass surface of black color. The buttons are hidden, the left “click” works almost on the entire surface, and the right one – only in the lower right corner. Pressing muffled, but well-felt, the course of the surface is minimal. Synaptics ClickPad V1.2 is used. We do not have special claims for the adequacy of gesture recognition, although, of course, it could be better.

As a web camera, the review hero uses a standard 1.3 megapixel module of medium quality, and on both sides of it are two digital microphones for better sound recording and suppression of external noise. The camera itself is quite noisy, but for Skype conferences with good light it will be enough.

⇡ # Internal structure

To disassemble the Lenovo Ideapad Y700-17 you will need a conventional cross-head screwdriver. It is necessary to unscrew the 13 screws, then gently lift the lid, while releasing all the latches, and there are a lot of them. Including they are on the back edge, near the location of the cooling radiator. And this complicates the process of dismantling the laptop and requires caution and simultaneously application of certain efforts.

With a guarantee this action does not remove the laptop, so you can safely buy a model with a small amount of RAM and SSD: you will need – you will change.

In addition, you can put another 2.5-inch HDD with a standard SATA interface, install another wireless module, replace the battery (which may take 3-5 years of continuous use) and clean the cooling system.

The battery on the general background looks very small. The screen hinges are large and powerful – that’s why they are stiff. At the bottom cover in the area of ​​the hard disk drive are glued noise-absorbing materials. For better cooling, the RAM modules and the hard disk are covered with a special metal film.

The Y700 series is mainly represented by 15.6- and 17.3-inch models. The first can be equipped with processors not only Intel, but also AMD, which is found in the class of expensive multimedia notebooks seldom. A larger version works only with Intel’s quad-core 6th generation.

We did not find many configurations available. Each of them uses Full HD IPS-display, discrete GPU NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960M with 4 GB of on-board memory, configurations from a single HDD and various SSDs from 128 to 512 GB. The price for the most senior is about $ 1,200, or 100,000 rubles in Russian retail. A serious blow to competitors!

The modification Lenovo Ideapad Y700-17 that came to us, as it should, is equipped with the latest Intel 6th generation processor Core i7-6700HQ, which is 14 nm standard. The nominal processor frequency is 2.6 GHz. Supported by Hyper-Threading and TurboBoost: the frequency can automatically rise to 3.5 GHz with the load on one core and up to 3.1 GHz with the load on all four. The volume of the cache memory of the third level is impressive 6 MB. The processor belongs to solutions with a standard voltage – its thermal package is 45 W.

The integrated Intel HD Graphics 530 GPU and discrete NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960M with its own dedicated GDDR5 memory of 4 GB are responsible for the graphics. This is a medium-sized gaming GPU, allowing you to play more or less in any game, although not at high graphics settings.

The southern bridge is the set of system logic Intel Sunrise Point HM170. The amount of RAM in our case is 16 GB. It operates in two-channel mode, two SO-DIMM-modules DDR4-2133 (1066 MHz) produced by Samsung each 8 GB each are used.

The laptop is equipped with a 17.3-inch IPS panel manufactured by LG Display company with a resolution of 1920 × 1080 pixels (Full HD standard), a 16: 9 aspect ratio and a standard W-LED backlight. The screen is likely glossy, but covered with glass with a semi-matte protective surface. It effectively fights against glare, but the picture is not “crystal clear”, as on high-grade glossy screens. Finger control is not supported.

In the laptop version that came to us, the manufacturer uses two drives: solid-state and classic HDD. The first one is the familiar Samsung PM871, but with a capacity of 128 GB, which directly affected the recording speeds. The drive, made in the M.2 2280 format, is connected to the standard SATA3 interface. The system works quickly, but not that it flies. On the other hand, if you have not worked for a PC or laptop with an SSD, the impressions will be most positive.

To store information, a hard disk with a rotation speed of 5400 rpm is used – Western Digital WD10SPCX-24HWST1, also working on SATA3. It is quiet, works almost imperceptibly, and its data storage speed is 100%.

Wi-Fi 802.11 a / b / g / n / ac wireless connections and Bluetooth 4.1 provide Qualcomm Atheros QCA9377. For a wired connection, the Gigabit Realtek controller answers. The sound is managed by the Realtek ALC235 HDA codec in conjunction with a built-in 2.1 speaker system, created in conjunction with JBL. CD / DVD-drive in the laptop is not used.

The review’s hero is equipped with a built-in lithium-polymer battery with a claimed capacity of 60 Wh * h. But the information tools in this regard have their own opinion – slightly more than 63 Wh, which, you see, let and a small difference, but it’s nice. On the other hand, if we compare with the performance of other 17.3-inch notebooks, we can say that Lenovo has certainly been greedy with the capacity, and the size of the battery itself proves it.
