ATMs under threat

It turns out that in order to thoroughly gut the ATM it is not necessary to install skimmers on it, to blow it up or steal it with a steel cable tied to the car. The Russian banking community again faced the next cyber threat.

The new virus is aimed at stealing money not from customers trying to withdraw money, but from the ATM itself. The malicious code is introduced into the operating system of the ATM through infected computers of specialists of the internal network of banks.

The most horrible and interesting thing is that the virus is almost imperceptible. It is incorporeal, since it is devoid of a file body, therefore, even the most advanced antivirus programs do not respond to it. Taking advantage of its impunity, the virus, in fact, receives a “permanent residence permit” from the ATM.

And then begins in the full sense of the word robbery in broad daylight. Attackers, knowing a special code, withdraw all the contents of the so-called first cassette from the ATM, where the largest denominations of 1 or 5 thousand rubles are located.

While specialists in the field of banking cybersecurity are at a loss and are considering how to protect themselves from this scourge.
